This issue features a study on the cultural and material dimensions of energy transition in Jeju, South Korea. The authors characterize the introduction of wind turbines as a process of ‘implantation,’ where alien materiality is embedded into the local land-based memory. Therefore, we select a coastal landscape of Jeju as the cover, contrasting the towering white turbines against the island's signature black basalt rocks. This juxtaposition materializes the ‘Carbon Free Island’ initiative, visualizing the friction and uneasy accommodation between traditional nature and future energy visions.
