After a serious nuclear accident occurred in Fukushima, Japan, in the spring of 2011, antinuclear protests sprang up around the world, including in several East Asian countries. One such demonstration, dubbed "Sunflower," took place in April 2011 in Taiwan. The organizers, mostly environmental groups, urged the government to increase Taiwan's renewable energy sources: since all energy on Earth derives ultimately from the sun, the sunflower was their chosen symbol for sustainable enrgy in a nuclear-free Taiwan. The cover photograph shows graffiti the activists left in front of the Office of the President to convey their policy agenda.
