This essay introduces the forum "Engaging Asia," a set of essays drawn from a roundtable by the same name cosponsored at the 2011 Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) annual meeting by SHOT and the History of Science Society. The forum explores the history as both a method and a practice of the studies of science and technology in Asia. This essay highlights the varieties of audiences and interlocutors that exist for Asian histories of science and technology and underscores the forum authors' productive challenges to both the content and the methods of historical analysis.
