We are pleased to be able to announce at last our editorial team in its entirety for what will be volumes 16 through 18. As we said in the Winter issue of Volume 15, it’s been a transitional period for all of us here at EASTS. Our editorial board has demonstrated its resilience in soliciting and curating the best scholarship possible, including what might be called “Covid STS,” under the threat of pandemic. And Covid is still very much with us—the controversies over tracing individuals and mandatory vaccination, the disputes over strategies to cope with it, and the challenges it raises have kept haunting STS scholars, and more are waiting ahead for us to comprehend and to respond to.
We are also facing a transitional period in global publishing. We were fortunate to have Routledge as our publishing partner during the pandemic; together we performed brilliantly in fighting the many consequences of Covid that challenged our mission as a scholarly periodical. The darkest time seems to have passed, though general issues of global publishing, such as open-access strategies and flexible subscription plans, remain. Some of our editors have already been considering these issues, as will our new board in the coming years.
Last but not least comes institutional transition. As we mentioned previously (in Vol. 13, No. 3; see Kuo 2019), there have already been several transformations in the EASTS editorial board. This time around, although its structure will remain the same, we will be experimenting with its robustness, as you might say. By distributing editorial responsibility and governance in a more strategic way, we expect not just to survive the increasing presence worldwide of what we could call “shallow” scholarship, but to actively reach out editorially to new territories and disciplines that faithfully capture global STS and East Asia. This issue also coincides with Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology, our main sponsor, reorganizing institutionally into the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). With our new editorial board in place, we’re very much celebrating this change and looking forward to working with the NSTC to create even more outstanding and exciting issues in the future.
