Nie Jing-bao is a specialist of bioethics and intercultural medical history. Currently, he is an associate professor at Otago University (New Zealand) and a faculty associate at renowned Chinese institutions (including Beijing University). At the time of starting this research, Nie writes, "despite the fact that I had born in China and lived there for nearly thirty years, I knew nothing about the family planning program" (2). However, he undertook a comprehensive study in order to present the' "varied 'native' Chinese view point on abortion" (9). Through this book, Nie attempts to interpret the Chinese silence surrounding abortion in a manner that Westerners can understand, because Western scholars and media regard this silence as unethical and as moral indifference toward abortion.
